Heat pump efficiency ratings are important because they directly affect your energy bills. Manufacturers don’t make these industry terms easy to understand and these efficiency calculations are far everyday layman’s terms. Measurements like SEER, HSPF, EER, and ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ are all acronyms that represent heat pump efficiency measurements.

Well, okay the last one was just the alphabet, but you get the picture. Here is all you need to know about heat pump efficiency.

SEER: Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio

SEER measures heat pump cooling efficiency. These ratings range anywhere from 13.0 into the upper 20’s. The Lennox XP25 offers a 23.5 SEER rating and is the highest SEER rated central heat pump we carry.

The federal government has put a minimum efficiency rating of 13.0 SEER on all newly manufactured heat pumps and air conditioners in order to promote sustainability and energy efficiency. Therefore, 13 SEER is the lowest rating you will see on new heat pumps and air conditioners.

EER: Energy Efficiency Ratio

EER also measures heat pump cooling efficiency. However, SEER is figured over a scope of outdoor temperatures and EER is normally calculated by a specific outdoor temperature. In other words, SEER is the average cooling efficiency over fluctuating temperatures and EER is the cooling efficiency over an average temperature.

SEER is used more often than EER and is seen as the industry standard on cooling efficiency. Keep in mind, occasionally rebates and tax credits require all three efficiency measurements to be met in order to qualify for funding. Therfore, in certain circumstances EER is just as important as SEER and HSPF.

HSPF: Heating Seasonal Performance Factor

HSPF measures heat pump heating efficiency. HSPF heating efficiency ranges from 7.7 on the lower end up to nearly 13.0. The Lennox XP25 is once again the highest HSPF rated central heat pump we carry. The federal government has also put a minimum HSPF rating of 7.7 on newly manufactured heat pumps as well as air conditioners.

Higher efficiency ratings means lower energy bills (all else being equal). Efficiency ratings are one of the main factors you will want to consider when purchasing a new heat pump. These ratings are not something that should be glanced over or taken lightly as they are one of the biggest price indicators.
