2025 HVAC Refrigerant Transition: What Homeowners Need to Know

Learn about the 2025 HVAC refrigerant transition to eco-friendly alternatives, R-454B and R-32. Miller’s Heating & Air helps Vancouver homeowners stay compliant with new standards and offers energy-efficient system upgrades.

Starting in 2025, HVAC refrigerants will change to environmentally friendly options.
Is your system ready?

As part of ongoing efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, the EPA is phasing out older refrigerants like R-410A and introducing eco-friendly alternatives: R-454B and R-32. These changes impact the future of HVAC systems, ensuring more sustainable cooling for homes.

At Miller’s Heating & Air, we’re committed to keeping our Vancouver customers informed and prepared for these changes.

Understanding the Transition to New Refrigerants

The 2025 refrigerant transition refers to new regulations requiring the use of more eco-friendly refrigerants in HVAC systems to lower greenhouse gas emissions and reduce ozone depletion. Older refrigerants like R-410A are being phased out in favor of newer, more sustainable options like R-454B and R-32. Lennox’s new product lineup will feature both options: R-454B for whole-home ducted systems and R-32 for ductless systems.

In more detail, the American Innovation and Manufacturing (AIM) Act, passed in 2020 as part of a global effort to cut greenhouse gases, gave the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) authority to regulate hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) and start phasing down high-HFC refrigerants by 2036. To meet this target, the EPA requires manufacturers to adopt refrigerants with a global warming potential (GWP) of 700 or less by 2025.

What Does the Refrigerant Change Mean for You?

  • Efficient Cooling: The new refrigerants, R-454B and R-32, are designed to improve the efficiency of your cooling system while being safer for the environment.

  • Existing Systems: If you have an older HVAC system using R-410A, don't worry—Miller's Heating & Air offers maintenance for your current unit. However, once it's time for a replacement, we’ll guide you toward systems that comply with the new refrigerants.

  • Long-Term Savings: Switching to the new systems may qualify you for energy rebates and incentives, making the upgrade more affordable.

Are the new refrigerants safe?

Yes. Although the refrigerants that comply with the 2025 regulations are classified as A2L, meaning they are mildly flammable, they are no more dangerous than other common household products. In fact, many newer cars, portable air conditioners, and heat pumps already use these refrigerants.

At Lennox, safety is a top priority. Our equipment is designed, tested, and certified to meet the latest standards for these eco-friendly refrigerants. We've also added extra safety measures, like a Refrigerant Detection System that lowers refrigerant levels in case of a leak, ensuring your system runs safely and reliably.
