Electric Furnace

Efficiency and cost: Electric furnaces have a reputation for their high energy efficiency and cost effectiveness. They convert nearly all the energy they consume into heat. Electricity is usually pricier than natural gas, leading to higher heating costs, especially in colder months.

Installation and Maintenance: Electric furnaces are relatively easy to install, as they don't require venting systems like gas furnaces. They also have fewer moving parts, which often translates to lower maintenance needs and costs.

Environmental Impact: Electric furnaces have no emissions, so they are better for indoor air quality. But if your electricity comes from fossil fuels, it may not have a significant environmental impact.

Heating Speed: Electric furnaces provide consistent heat and can reach desired temperatures relatively quickly. However, they might struggle in extremely cold conditions.

Gas Furnace

Efficiency and Cost: Gas furnaces are cheaper and more efficient than electric ones. This is especially true in areas with low natural gas prices. Although they have some energy efficiency loss because of exhaust gases, their overall heating cost can be lower.

Installation and Maintenance: Gas furnaces require proper venting systems for the exhaust gases they produce. This makes installation a bit more complex and potentially costlier. Additionally, gas furnaces need regular maintenance to ensure safe and efficient operation.

Environmental Impact: Gas furnaces burn natural gas, emitting combustion byproducts like carbon dioxide and other pollutants. However, manufacturers have designed modern gas furnaces to be more efficient and emit fewer emissions than older models.

Heating Speed: Gas furnaces heat homes faster than electric furnaces, making them better for colder climates.

What is a Good Efficiency Rating for a Furnace?

AFUE

Each type of HVAC unit has a different efficiency rating. Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency (AFUE) rates both gas and electric furnaces. Modern technology has allowed these units to be up to 98.% AFUE. However, the industry considers any furnace with 90%+ AFUE as a high efficiency furnace.

Gas Vs. Electric Note: Electric furnaces run at 100% AFUE. However, running an electric furnace may be more expensive to run than gas.

Gas Furnace vs. Heat Pump: Heat pumps are generally more efficient. However, they don't keep up in extreme temperatures as well as gas furnaces.

Energy Star

The Energy Star sticker labels high efficiency heating and cooling equipment. In order for a furnace to have this label, it must be 90%+ in AFUE. We sell Lenox high efficiency models that meet this strict requirements.

Department of Energy (DOE)

There have been some major new developments in furnace efficiency standards set by the United States government. The Department of Energy (DOE) will use new standard AFUE ratings for furnaces by 2028.

All residential furnaces must have a minimum AFUE rating of 95%. They anticipate that this new standard will save the American public 24.8 billion dollars over 30 years.
