There are so many ways to enjoy the outdoors, from hiking scenic trails to relaxing in a local park. This is perfect time of year to explore the vibrant beauty of fall all around you.

Just make sure that before you get out to bask in the colorful outdoors you give your home and heating system the attention it needs! That way you’re prepared for cooler weather once it comes around.

Discovering the Best Fall Foliage Near Vancouver, WA

In this guide to Oregon and Washington fall colors, we’re going to look at some of the top scenic places to explore. We'll also share ways to prep your home for the winter ahead!

Top Scenic Drives for Fall Foliage Near Vancouver and Portland

We can’t think of a better way to appreciate the grandeur of the Pacific Northwest than with a long, scenic drive. Here are a few of our can’t-miss road trip routes.

Columbia River Gorge Scenic Byway

Around every twist and bend along the Columbia River Gorge Scenic Byway, you’ll find yet another view that leaves you in awe. Hike up to Multnomah Falls. Here you can feel the thunderous power of water plunging over 600 feet. Or capture a breathtaking selfie at the Vista House on Crown Point.

For a more adventurous trek, wind your way to Rowena Crest. The panoramic views are some of the best in the region.

Mount Hood Loop

The Mount Hood Loop is one of our absolute favorite drives. It circles around many iconic landmarks, such as Trillium Lake and Timberline Lodge.

We recommend going in mid October through early November. The weather will still be nice enough for a hike but cold enough to justify a hot cup of delicious cocoa at the lodge.

Silver Falls State Park

Finally, we have Silver Falls State Park, which is a hiker’s dream. The Trail of Ten Falls is a must-do, though make sure you have some good hiking shoes with you.

If you’re looking for a good spot to picnic, however, South Falls is where it’s at. Not only does it offer incredible views of the surrounding area, but you can also step behind the waterfall for a surreal experience. Pack your poncho!

Fun Fact: Bigleaf maple are the only native maple trees to the Northwest's coastal regions

Best Hiking Trails for Autumn Colors

If you’d rather get some fresh air and get those legs moving, these hiking trails are some of the best around.

Beacon Rock State Park

With unbeatable Columbia River views, Beacon Rock State Park offers an unforgettable hike. The main trail is challenging, but after tackling steep switchbacks, you’ll be rewarded with stunning gorge views.

Forest Park in Portland

If you don’t want to get too far outside of the city, Forest Park is an awesome system of urban trails. While Wildwood Trail will give you the best bang for your buck in terms of fall colors, the Pittock Mansion Loop offers an easier and more charming walking trail alongside the creek.

Lacamas Park in Camas, WA

Traveling with family? Lacamas Park has plenty of easy trails with everything from lakes to waterfalls and, of course, endless yellow orange and red fall foliage.

In fact, one of the best places to see fall foliage in Washington state is Round Lake Loop. It is a relatively easy stroll with lots of spots to picnic along the way.

Fun Fact: Alder is one of the most common deciduous trees in the Pacific northwest.

Packing for a Perfect Fall Day Trip

In the Pacific Northwest, autumn weather is notoriously fickle. It will often shift from bright and temperate to brisk and rainy with little warning. To fully enjoy your day trip, being equipped for all eventualities is essential. Dress in Layers

Any local will tell you that the way to stay comfortable here in the fall is by dressing in layers. Start with a moisture-wicking base layer to keep dry. Layer that with a sweater or warm fleece, and keep a lightweight waterproof jacket on hand in case of rain.

Prepare for Rain

Speaking of rain, having waterproof gear can go a long way. Beyond a rain jacket, have some waterproof shoes and an extra pair of socks with you in the car. Because you never know when you'll end up splashing through a few puddles.

Don’t Forget Snacks and Drinks

Nothing can ruin a leaf peeping trip faster than feeling hangry. Pack some healthy snacks to keep your energy up. Think granola or fresh fruit!

If you want to try some of the local hotspots, we recommend checking out Coava Coffee in Portland. In Vancouver we recommend the Blue Door Bakery that has some of the best homemade pastries in Clark County.

Preparing Your Home’s Heating System Before Your Fall Adventure

Before you get out and start soaking in the red orange and yellow fall colors it’s important to make sure your home is prepped for your return.

Schedule a Heating Inspection

We can’t overstate the importance of scheduling a professional heating inspection. Fall is one of the best times to have a pro come and check things out. It’ll keep you from dealing with an unexpected system breakdown when temperatures drop and you need it most.

Change Your Air Filters

Check and replace your air filters if needed. Higher MERV-rated filters work best against allergens like dust and pet dander in the fall.

Test Your Thermostat

Turn on your thermostat to ensure it’s working correctly. A smart thermostat can improve heating efficiency and save on energy costs.

Combining Home Comfort and Outdoor Adventure

There’s nothing better than coming back to a cozy home after a fall hike. With a well-maintained heating system, you’ll always have a warm place to return to.

Wrapping Up Your Perfect Fall Adventure in the Pacific Northwest

Fall here in the Pacific Northwest is nothing short of magical. Especially with the vibrant fall foliage in Vancouver adding to the charm.

But as you’re out exploring all the beautiful spots this season, remember to take a moment to schedule that heating system inspection. This way, you’ll always come back to a cozy home, no matter how chilly it gets outside!
